Pilates

Pilates consists of a series of controlled, flowing movements designed to realign and balance the body’s structure and increase flexibility and strength in the body without impacting the joints. The primary aim of the approach is to promote strength and stability around the ‘core’, allowing greater support of the spine.

Postural awareness is a key focal point and as there is no aerobic exercise or loud music to distract the mind, each movement is performed with total balance and precision allowing a constant connection between mind and body.

Joseph Pilates created the original Pilates method, which he originally called Contrology, in the early 20th century to strengthen his own body and improve his own chronic health conditions. He then worked with athletes and ballet dancers to improve their training and help them to become stronger and more flexible.

By integrating contemporary research in physical therapy and biomechanics to build on the original methodologies, today Pilates can be practiced safely, with the close guidance of a trained teacher, by people from all walks of life, of all fitness levels, and with all kinds of injuries and mobility limitations.
